Wharton Park
A Local Landmark Near Durham
A Historic Park in Bishop Auckland
Wharton Park is a 32-hectare area of parkland and woodland in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, home to beautifully landscaped gardens, an impressive collection of rare trees — over 100 different species — and the site of the ancient 13th-century Wharton Castle. Originally home to a medieval fortified manor house, the park has been shaped over centuries into the mix of formal gardens, mature woodland and open recreation space visitors find today. The grounds are particularly well known among tree enthusiasts, with specimens ranging from mature evergreen conifers to a range of deciduous species planted over more than a century. It remains one of Bishop Auckland's best-loved green spaces, drawing visitors from across County Durham for its combination of history, landscaping and open parkland. The park is maintained to a high standard year-round, with clearly marked paths making it accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs as well as more adventurous walkers.
What's on Offer
The park offers boating on its lake, mini-golf, tennis, basketball, cycling and an outdoor adventure playground, alongside formal flower beds and a herb garden. Wildlife is a big draw too — red squirrels, foxes, badgers and kingfishers are all found within the park, alongside more than 100 species of birds across its wildflower meadows and nature trails. Guided tours and seasonal events, from art exhibitions to outdoor theatre, run throughout the year. There's enough here to fill a full day without repeating yourself, from a quiet walk among the tree collection to more active pursuits for families with children. Seasonal highlights include spring bulb displays in the formal beds and autumn colour across the tree collection, making repeat visits worthwhile throughout the year.
