Composite Decking

What Is Composite Decking?

Composite decking is a man-made alternative to timber decking, made from a mixture of wood fibres, plastics and bonding agents that's combined, heated and pressed into boards, then cooled. The finished boards come ready-coloured and have a realistic wood-like appearance, without the ongoing maintenance that timber decking demands.

We design and install composite decking as part of a wider garden landscaping project, as a raised patio or sun deck, or as a durable, cost-effective alternative to traditional timber decking or stone paving.

Because the boards are manufactured rather than cut from a single piece of timber, they come out far more consistent in colour, grain and thickness than natural wood, which makes for a neater, more uniform finish across a whole deck area.

Why Choose Composite Over Timber?

Because composite boards contain plastic within their structure, they're far less prone to rot, dampness and insect damage than timber decking, and they won't warp, crack or splinter over time. You don't need to sand, stain or seal composite boards every year – a job that can be time-consuming and messy with timber decking.

The boards also resist fading from the sun's UV rays, so the colour holds up far better over the years than standard timber. They're also virtually slip-resistant thanks to a very low water absorption rate, which makes them a useful choice around swimming pools and hot tub areas.

All you need to keep a composite deck looking its best is an occasional sweep or rinse down – there's no annual re-staining, no exposed nail heads working loose, and no soft or splitting boards to watch out for as the years go by.

Getting the Right Design

While the initial cost of composite decking is typically a little higher than timber, the extended lifespan and minimal upkeep mean it usually works out more cost-effective over the years, with a decking area that keeps its good looks for the least amount of effort.

We can design and install composite decking to complement your existing landscaping – whether that's a raised deck attached to the house, a sun deck in a corner of the garden, or a full wraparound terrace – with a range of finishes to match your patio, fencing or planting scheme. Many customers pair a composite deck with an area of Indian sandstone paving to break the garden into distinct zones, combining the warmth of timber-look boards with natural stone underfoot.

Every project starts with a free, no-obligation consultation, where we'll talk through board colours, sizing and any raised or stepped sections your garden might need before agreeing a final design and quote.
