Garden Ideas with Wood

Rustic Wood Features for Your Garden

Wood brings a warmth and character to a garden that hard materials alone can't match, and it's one of the most affordable ways to make a garden stand out. Log steps are a simple way to add a rustic look to sloped areas – typically laid over a compacted, sand-based path and edged for stability, they can be left with the bark on for a natural finish or trimmed for a tidier one.

A rustic screen fence, built from timber palings with a plain or ornate gate, adds privacy and character while dividing off different parts of the garden. For a bigger statement, a wooden arch or trellis arbour makes an attractive entrance point between sections of a garden – echoing the same role that stone or brick steps have played in gardens for centuries, just with a warmer, more natural feel.

Timber weathers naturally over time, which many people like, but an occasional coat of stain or preservative will keep any of these features looking sharp and extend their working life by several years.

Garden Benches and Seating

A timber garden bench is both practical and decorative. Simple split-log benches – made by standing logs on end or splitting a trunk into two facing halves – work well as informal seating around tree trunks, under arbours or along a path, adding another layer of interest to the wider landscape design.

More finished options, such as an arched-back bench with armrests and a hidden storage compartment underneath, combine comfort with everyday usefulness. Because a bench is often a garden's focal point, it's worth spending a little more on durable timber rather than a cheap resin alternative – quality wood looks better for longer and won't draw attention away from the rest of your planting.

Fencing, Gates and Boundaries

Wooden picket fencing paired with a matching gate is a classic way to mark a boundary or divide different areas of a garden. Timber is generally the most cost-effective and easiest material to work with compared with metal or brick panel fencing, and it has the added benefit of being a safer, more forgiving surface for children and pets to play around.

Whatever combination of wood features you're considering – steps, screens, arches or fencing – a professional landscaper can help make sure they work together as one coherent design rather than a collection of separate additions.
