Keeping Paving, Patios and Driveways in Good Condition

Regular maintenance keeps outdoor surfaces safe, functional and good-looking, and helps prevent small issues turning into costly repairs. The right approach differs a little by material, but the basics — sweeping, washing and occasional sealing — apply across the board. Weekly sweeping clears leaves and debris before they can stain or encourage weed growth, and a wash with a hose or pressure washer, on a sensible setting, lifts stubborn dirt that sweeping alone won't shift.

Block Paving

Block paving is a popular choice for its appearance and the range of design options available. Routine sweeping and washing keeps it looking sharp — but avoid directing a pressure washer jet straight into the joints, as this washes out the jointing sand and can destabilise the blocks. Sunken blocks can usually be lifted, topped up with sand and re-bedded level with the surrounding paving; damaged blocks are simply swapped for a matching replacement. Sealing isn't essential for block paving, but it adds protection against staining, weeds and moss, and helps slow the natural fading that comes with UV exposure over time.

Other Surfaces at a Glance

Concrete should have cracks filled promptly — water ingress is the main enemy, especially through freeze-thaw cycles — and resealed every 2–3 years. Tarmac benefits from the same resealing schedule and should be kept clear of sharp tools that can gouge the surface. Resin-bound surfaces are naturally weed-resistant and rarely need sealing, but should only be pressure-washed on a medium setting. Gravel needs periodic topping up and raking to stay level and well-drained, plus a weed-control membrane underneath to cut down on regrowth. Indian sandstone should be cleaned with mild soapy water rather than harsh chemicals, and resealed every 2–3 years to protect its colour. If any of these surfaces are due for replacement rather than repair, we also handle new concrete installations, block paving installations, tarmac installations and resin bound driveways, patios, and paths across Durham — just ask when you call.

Seasonal Care and Common Problems

Spring and summer are the best time to inspect for winter damage, fill any cracks, and reseal surfaces once temperatures are reliably above 10°C. In autumn, regular leaf clearance prevents staining and slippery surfaces; in winter, clear snow with a plastic (not metal) shovel and use sand rather than rock salt, which can damage concrete and tarmac. Cracks, stains and moss are easiest to deal with early — a stiff brush and the right cleaner sorts most of them, though stubborn or widespread problems are usually best left to a professional.

A little routine care goes a long way toward protecting your investment, but if your paving needs more than a clean — resetting, re-jointing or a full relay — Premium Landscaping can take care of it as part of a wider garden or driveway project.
